§ Ms. Harmanasked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many coronary artery bypass operations per million of the population in (a)England and (b)the area covered by the South-East Thames regional health authority were carried out in the most recent year for which figures are available; and how many he estimates will be carried out in 1984.
§ Mr. John PattenInformation is not available in the form requested. I understand that the number of coronary artery bypass grafts reported to the United Kingdom cardiac surgery register of the Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons in 1981 — the latest date for which figures are available—were 5,951 or 106.3 per million of the United Kingdom population. This represents a 22.5 per cent. increase over the 1980 figure of 4,859 operations—86.8 per million of the population.
