Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many young people in Liverpool are currently engaged in youth training schemes; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

At the end of November 1984 there were 5,277 young people in training on the youth training scheme in the Liverpool local authority district.

In Liverpool, as well as nationally, the response to the scheme has been most encouraging and shows that young people recognise the advantages of participating in a high quality training programme.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied with the evaluation of the social and life skills training element in the youth training scheme both inside and outside colleges of further education.

I am satisfied with the arrangements for the evaluation of the personal effectiveness and communications skills element of the youth training scheme.

* Manpower Services Commission accident figures for the youth training scheme are compiled on a similar basis to those prepared by the Health and Safety Executive on employed persons. However, the figures quoted in the above table will include a number of accidents which did not occur "at work"; in particular, road traffic accidents during scheme time and accidents to trainees in educational situations or establishments, which may not have been reportable to HSE had the individuals been employed.
