HC Deb 20 December 1984 vol 70 c264W
Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is satisfied with the action taken by local authorities in South Yorkshire following the recent asbestos deposition.

Sir George Young

I am advised that the Sheffield city and Rotherham metropolitan borough councils have taken appropriate and effective action, and that the work of cleaning up is progressing smoothly.

Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will provide financial support to the local authorities concerned with the recent asbestos fallout in South Yorkshire.

Sir George Young

My hon. Friend will consider any representations that the authorities concerned may wish to make.

Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action he has taken in response to the recent fall-out of asbestos in parts of South Yorkshire; and if he will make a statement.

Sir George Young

The primary responsibility for taking action in this matter lies with the local environmental health departments; my Department has kept in touch with the authorities concerned.

Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his estimate of the volume of asbestos which fell upon areas of South Yorkshire between 14 and 16 December.

Sir George Young

It is not possible to make an accurate estimate of the volume of asbestos which fell on these areas.
