HC Deb 19 December 1984 vol 70 c165W
Mr. Hirst

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will collect and publish accurate statistics on an annual basis, showing the number of people employed in the tourism industry in Wales.

Mr. John Stradling Thomas

In view of the impracticability of identifying those people whose employment depends solely upon tourism detailed information could not be produced on the basis requested. However, the triennial census of employment gives details of employment in catering and other tourist-oriented trades as well as figures for many other industries which serve tourists as well as local customers. While a research study on behalf of the Wales tourist board published in 1977 provides a basis for the board's current estimate that at least 90,000 are employed either directly or indirectly in tourism in Wales.
