HC Deb 19 December 1984 vol 70 c189W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the annual increase in the savings ratio since 1982 for the United Kingdom, Germany and Sweden; and what has been the corresponding increase in manufacturing output, the money supply and retail prices.

Mr. Ian Stewart

Figures from national sources for personal saving ratios in United Kingdom, Sweden and Germany in 1982 and 1983 are shown in the table. It should be noted that definitions vary widely across countries. Data on manufacturing output, money supply and retail prices for the United Kingdom are published in the CSO'sEconomic Trends. Comparable figures for Germany and Sweden are available in the OECD's monthly "Main Economic Indicators".

Personal Savings Ratio (percentage of personal disposable income)
1982 1983
United Kingdom 13.0 11.0
Germany 14.0 12.5
