58. Penhaligonasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will outline what the Government's policy is on providing support for research and development for information technology; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. FletcherInformation technology is one of the few high growth sectors of economies throughout the world. In recognition of its unique significance, this Government have, since 1979, devoted increasing funds to support the development of information technology in the United Kingdom and have engaged in or encouraged a range of programmes aimed at stimulating the use of IT and awareness of its potential benefits.
The Government's commitment to ensuring a healthy United Kingdom IT industry in the longer term has been demonstrated by their support for the five-year pre-competitive Alvey research programme; and for the ESPRIT programme, which is also strengthening industry and Government collaboration at European level.
The Government remain committed to supporting innovative developments likely to lead to internationally competitive products and to promoting their successful use in the United Kingdom environment. The success of the DTI's support schemes has led to the recently announced moratorium on further applications. I shall be in a position to make a statement on the future orientation of R and D support on completion of the current review.
