Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many people in Wales have so far this year been convicted of crimes associated with the possession of heroin or similar drugs;

(2) how many people in Wales in 1983–84 were convicted of drug-related offences.

Mr. Mellor

The latest available information relates to 1983, when 1,110 persons were found guilty in Wales of offences under drugs legislation or of other offences involving controlled drugs, 92 of whom were found guilty of offences involving class A drugs, as defined in the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Corresponding statistics for 1984 will be published next summer.
