HC Deb 13 December 1984 vol 69 cc576-7W
Mr. Wiggin

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will conduct an inquiry into the recent accident at Bristol airport when an A300 Airbus of Iberian Airways overshot the runway with 245 people on board; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Spicer

The incident referred to did not involve serious damage to the aeroplane or injury to any persons and because of this it was not a notifiable accident as statutorily defined. It is not the usual practice for the accident investigation branch to investigate this type of occurrence and so on this occasion the chief inspector of accidents has decided that no further action from' him is necessary. He is content for the Spanish authority to continue its own investigation as permitted by international agreement.
