HC Deb 11 December 1984 vol 69 cc450-1W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the number of (a) male and (b) female undergraduate students following degree courses in England and Wales, the number who receive a mandatory grant award and the number who receive dependants' additions to their basic grant award; and, of these numbers, how many students' dependants' awards are made in relation to dependent children.

Mr. Brooke

In 1982–83 there were 192,000 male and 150,000 female full-time and sandwich home students following first degree courses in England and Wales. In the same year 370,500 students received a full value mandatory award from English and Welsh local education authorities. Information on mandatory awards by sex of student is not available. There is no direct link between award holders and numbers studying in England and Wales. This is because award holders from English and Welsh authorities could choose to study anywhere in the United Kingdom and vice versa.

In 1982–83, 9,600 students received an additional dependants' allowance. Numbers of students' dependants' awards made in relation to dependent children are not available.
