HC Deb 06 December 1984 vol 69 cc248-9W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate how much extra revenue in real terms the Treasury would receive in a full year from an increase in taxation imposed by the next Budget of 5p, 10p, 15p, 20p and 25p, respectively, per packet of 20 cigarettes; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hayhoe

The estimated net revenue changes, at 1985–86 prices, are:

Change in price of 20 cigarettes (pence) Full year revenue yield (£ million)
5 160
10 320
15 475
20 625
25 770

For the larger price increases the estimates are subject to considerable margins of uncertainty.

Mr. Pavitt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish the number of cigarettes sold in the United Kingdom in 1983 and his estimate for the number which are likely to be sold in 1984; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hayhoe

Official statistics of cigarette sales are not collected. However, according to Customs and Excise returns, 102.6 billion cigarettes chargeable with excise duty were cleared for domestic consumption in 1983.

No estimate is available for 1984 as projections for cigarette clearances are not made.
