asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total number of prescriptions for benzodiazepines issued by year during the last five years in the Merseyside regional health authority.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the cost to the National Health Service of smoking-induced diseases; and if he will make a statement.

The current estimated cost to the National Health Service in England and Wales of diseases attributable to smoking is about £120 million a year.
