HC Deb 03 December 1984 vol 69 cc56-7W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the number and location of women-only work preparation courses funded by the Manpower Services Commission in each year from 1979–80 to 1984–85.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The number of women-only work preparation courses by region for each year 1979–80 to 1984–85 is as follows

Region £ Expenditure
Scotland 9,500
Northern 8,400
Yorkshire and Humberside 54,900
North-West 77,700
Midlands 64,400
Wales 45,300
South-West 102,000
South-East 43,800
London 41,000
Total 447,000

Total expenditure under the scheme for women-only training in 1984–85 is expected to be £1.25 million. Comparable figures are not available for earlier years. In addition, we are spending around £1.16 million in support of nationally organised forms of women-only training provision for which regional figures are not available.

Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement, for each Manpower Services Commission region, on planned expenditure and course capacity, for women-only courses which is envisaged in the current Manpower Services Commission corporate plan.

Mr. Peter Morrison

Plans for the 1985–86 financial year and beyond have not yet been finalised but it is anticipated that total provision for women-only training next year will be at broadly the same level as in 1984–85, around £2.4 million.

Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the policy of the Manpower Services Commission to local authority initiatives in funding women-only training courses.

Mr. Peter Morrison

Decisions taken by local authorities on particular training which they wish to support are not a matter for the Manpower Services Commission.

Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the number of entrants to women-only training and work preparation courses in London in each year from 1979–80 to 1984–85.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The number of women entering women-only work preparation courses in the London region for each year from 1979–80 is as follows:

* Shows registrations made to date in the 1984–85 training year. Registrations are received from employers throughout the year. The Engineering Industry Training Board's national recruitment target for apprentice trainees in 1984–85 is 8,650.
† Estimated.
‡The engineering industry training board acts as a registering body for some training to comparable standards carried out in industries other than engineering. The national totals for these registrations are shown and are excluded from the main totals.

The number entering traditional apprenticeships will increasingly fail to reflect the extent of skill training being undertaken in industry, due to the reform of existing training arrangements and public funding of first-year training under the youth training scheme.
