§ Mr. Bennasked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will invite the International Atomic Energy Agency to designate the prototype fast reactor for the application of International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.
§ Mr. GoodladUnder the terms of the United Kingdom/Euratom/IAEA safeguards agreement (Cmnd. 6730) the designation of facilities in the United Kingdom is a matter for the IAEA.
The prototype fast reactor and its associated reprocessing plant were designated by the IAEA for inspection over the period November 1980 to November 1982. The agency was responsible for the decision to terminate that designation. However, the facilities continue to be inspected by Euratom and to be subject to the United Kingdom/Euratom/IAEA safeguards agreement and to the Euratom treaty. All material processed in them is accounted for to both the IAEA and Euratom.
