HC Deb 03 December 1984 vol 69 c3W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisons are due for refurbishment in current programmes; and in how many night sanitation facilities will be provided.

Mr. Mellor

Major capital work is in progress or planned at 100 existing prison department establishments. When this programme is completed, access to night sanitation will be available in whole or in part at 96 establishments.

Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department for what reason it was decided not to provide night sanitation facilities during the planned refurbishment of C wing at Parkhurst prison.

Mr. Mellor

The work to be carried out on 'C' wing at this stage is the minimum necessary to reinstate the therapeutic unit in the wing as soon as possible. Night sanitation will ultimately be provided in all four wings at Parkhurst. But to provide such facilities in 'C' wing at this stage would delay the reopening of the therapeutic unit, and would have serious implications for the other major redevelopment schemes at the prison.

Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisons presently provide access to how many prisoners to night sanitation facilities.

Mr. Mellor

About 17,000 places in a total of 70 prison department establishments at present provide access to night sanitation.
