§ Mr. Speedasked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the stretches of dual carriageway, motorway and trunk road at present without a crash barrier between the carriageways and the dates such crash barriers are scheduled for installation.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe following stretches of motorway in England are without a safety fence between the carriageways:
- M5 South of Bristol 8km
- M6 Cumbria-Shap 14.5km
- M10 St. Albans bypass 5km
- M50 Ross Spur 35.5km
I am currently reviewing the traffic and accident records of these stretches to assess whether presence of a crash barrier would be of positive help on these lengths. I will write to my hon. Friend when I have reached a conclusion.
Similar information is not available for all-purpose dual carriageway trunk roads on which such safety fences are provided only as the need arises. There is no programme for the comprehensive provision of safety fences.
