HC Deb 03 December 1984 vol 69 c61W
Mr. Marland

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he has any plans to ban the use of asbestos in the construction or improvement of buildings partly or wholly financed by Government or local authority grants.

Sir George Young

Draft regulations have been published to prohibit all use of crocidolite or amosite (blue and brown asbestos), sprayed asbestos and the use of asbestos in thermal and acoustic insulation. The use of chrysotile (white) asbestos is declining, but there are some remaining uses in building materials where alternatives are not yet in general use and where the risk of release of asbestos fibres in normal use is negligible. There are no plans to ban the use of the remaining asbestos materials in the construction or improvement of buildings financed by grant.
