§ Mr. Soleyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will provide, for the latest convenient date, a table indicating the number of people detained under the Immigration Act in 1983 by country of origin.
§ Mr. Waddington[pursuant to his reply, 31 July 1984]: The available information on those detained overnight at any time in 1983 is as follows:

The statistics at this unit are kept in a different way and the information requested cannot be obtained without disproportionate cost. In 1983, 4,146 persons were detained there for some period, not necessarily overnight. All persons detained on arrival as passengers or crew or subsequently as illegal entrants or awaiting deportation are included. The places of detention were port detention units (other than Queen's building, Heathrow), Harmondsworth, police cells, prisons, remand centres and on board ship.
327WThe figures include an element of double counting as some persons will have been detained in more than one establishment and/or on more than one occasion.
