HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 c323W
Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many attacks were made on the public by dogs in the last year; and what percentage of these dogs were alsatians.

Mr. Hurd

The information requested is not collected centrally.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will issue guidance to the police that they should not allow partially trained police dogs which fail to make the grade to be given away unless they are entirely satisfied that public safety will not be at risk.

Mr. Hurd

The police consider the safety of the public before they find homes for unsuitable dogs and on the evidence available I do not consider that Home Office guidance is needed. I understand that most of the dogs found unsuitable are rejected at the outset of training.
