HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 cc277-8W
Mrs. Rumbold

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what levels of staff reductions his Department has achieved since the beginning of the current parliamentary Session.

Mr. Pattie

During the period 1 July 1983 to 1 July 1984, civilian staff numbers in the Ministry of Defence, inclusive of the Royal ordnance factories, reduced by 8,773, or 4.3 per cent.

Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the total (a) civilian and (b) service strength of the London headquarters staff of his Department; and whether he will give such information as is readily available as to the analysis by rank in each case.

Mr. Pattie

The total number of civilian and service staff serving in Ministry of Defence headquarters at the latest available date of 1 April 1984 was 19,398 and 3,543. There is no management requirement to identify the number of headquarter staff in London as distinct and apart from other London-based staff; and the information could only be provided at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many vacancies in his Department have been filled through the job release scheme in each of the last three years for which figures are available.

Mr. Pattie

[pursuant to his reply, 3 July 1984, c. 100]: from the information available, the number of vacancies in my Department filled through the job release scheme in each of the last three years is as follows:

Industrial Non-industrial Total
April 1981-March 1982 1,314 676 1,990
April 1982-March 1983 1,648 368 2,016
April 1983-March 1984 1,425 342 1,767
Total 4,387 1,386 5,773
