§ Mr. Onslowasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps his Department takes to monitor the number of salmon running up rivers in England and Wales.
§ Mr. JoplingNone. Water authorities in England and Wales have a statutory duty to maintain, improve and develop the salmon fisheries in their areas and the monitoring of the number of salmon running up their rivers thus falls to them. However, my Department gives advice to the water authorities on the use of fish counters and has taken on responsibility for collating and publishing the salmon and migratory trout catch statistics collected by the water authorities, commencing with the 1983 figures.
