HC Deb 30 April 1984 vol 59 c52W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if any decision has been taken not to replace chest consultants working in Manchester hospitals when they retire; and if there has been any recent change of policy by his Department in this regard.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

There has been no recent change in policy by our Department. The employment of consultants is a matter for health authorities, who must judge the need for appointments in the light of the constantly changing pattern of patient needs. I suggest the right hon. Member may wish to write direct to the chairman of the South Manchester health authority.
