HC Deb 13 April 1984 vol 58 c435W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many school leavers and young persons aged 17 and 18 years are currently registered as unemployed by county in Wales; and how those figures have varied during the last two years.

Mr. John Stradling Thomas

Information is not available in the precise form requested. For school leaver claimants a county breakdown is not available for 1982. The most recent figues are for March 1984 and these are set out in the following table along with those for March 1983

March 1983 March 1984 Change
South Glamorgan 767 660 -107
Mid Glamorgan 1,720 1,137 -583
West Glamorgan 1,024 873 -151

Dyfed 556 444 -112
Powys 82 70 -12
Gwynedd 322 249 -73

As to 17 and 18 year olds, prior to April 1983 17 year olds were not separately identified amongst under 18s. As with school leavers a county analysis of claimants is not available earlier than 1983. Based on the most recent information available (for January 1984) the figures are as follows:
