HC Deb 12 April 1984 vol 58 c315W
44. Mr. Ron Brown

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department which newspapers and journals prisoners are permitted to read in English prisons.

Mr. Hurd

Prisoners may be permitted to read the newspapers and journals of their own choice provided they are obtained through authorised channels and subject to the governor's overriding discretion to withhold or withdraw a particular issue if he considers that its content could present a threat to good order or discipline, is pornographic or is likely to have an adverse effect on an inmate from a medical point of view.
