§ Mr. Squireasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his latest estimate of the number of tax units with children with an income below the tax threshold; to what year the estimate refers; and how many of these tax units had an income from paid work and how many were dependent on social security benefits.
§ Mr. MooreIn 1984–85 it is estimated that there will be about 1,150,000 married couples with children and single parents with incomes below the thresholds proposed in my right hon. Friend's Budget statement. Of these, about 50,000 have income from paid work but are not entitled to family income supplement or housing benefit.; 400,000 have income from paid work and are entitled to family income supplement or housing benefit and the remaining 700,000 have no income other than social security benefits.
§ Mr. Andrew Bowdenasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate how many people who were not formerly liable for income tax will become liable once his proposals for taxation at source of bank deposit accounts are implemented.
§ Mr. Moore[pursuant to his reply, 9 April 1984 c. 87]: I regret that insufficient information is available to make a reliable estimate of the number of individuals, not at present liable to tax, who currently hold bank deposit accounts which will be within the scope of the proposed composite rate scheme. The number of such individuals who will be affected by the composite rate proposals will in any case depend to some extent on future decisions by depositors.
