§ Mr. Robert Atkinsasked the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he is taking to encourage the use of the aircraft fuel-additive, FM9, by British civil airline operators and those foreign operators who use British airports; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. David MitchellThe development of the aircraft fuel additive FM9 to produce anti-misting kerosene is a notable achievement. However, the blending of FM9 with kerosene is not a simple process and much developmental work remains to be done in areas such as engine performance and fuel systems compatibility before it can be proven as a safety measure.
The United Kingdom is working in close co-operation with the United States authorities in this development work, which will have to be followed by comprehensive proving trials. Until these are completed it would be premature to anticipate its acceptance for use by civil aircraft.
