HC Deb 09 April 1984 vol 58 c120W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish a list of those private rest and nursing homes which have failed to meet the required standards set by his Department.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Registration of residential care and nursing homes is the responsibility of local and health authorities respectively, and any home failing to meet the required standards is liable to have its registration refused or cancelled by the registering authority. Information about homes subject to such action is not held centrally.

Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the report by the chairman of the general medical service committee about the numbers and quality of staff employed in private nursing homes and rest homes.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We are aware of recent concern expressed by the general medical services committee about community services, including the staffing of private homes, but no report on the subject has yet been published. Private nursing and residential care homes are subject to periodic inspection by registering authorities to ensure that adequate standards of staffing and facilities are being maintained.
