HC Deb 04 April 1984 vol 57 cc555-6W
42. Mr. Tony Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will indicate the proportion of houses in the north-west region of England which are unfit for habitation; and how this compares with other regions.

Sir George Young

Estimates of the proportions of unfit dwellings in 1981 from the "English House Conditions Survey" and in April 1983 based on local authorities' housing investment programme returns are as follows:

Unfit Dwellings as a Percentage of Total Stock
Regions EHCS 1981 HIP's 1983
Northern, Yorks and Humberside and North West 7.8 2.7
South East 5.4 3.9
Rest of England 5.5 3.1
England 6.2 3.3

Authorities' estimates for the North West region yield a proportion of 2.8 per cent. unfit.
