HC Deb 03 April 1984 vol 57 c510W
18. Mr. O'Brien

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what investigations he has made in the last 12 months of industry's expectations of school leavers; and what has been industry's response.

Sir Keith Joseph

I have recently written to a wide range of employer associations inviting them to let me know what qualities their members really seek in school leavers. Many of the associations will naturally wish to consult their members and it will necessarily be a little while before they can respond to this invitation.

32. Mr. Lofthouse

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are his plans for providing education opportunities for 16-year-old school leavers unemployed at January 1984.

Sir Keith Joseph

All 16-year-old school leavers are guaranteed a place on a youth training scheme and there are opportunities to return to full-time education or to study part-time while seeking employment. Advice on the courses and schemes which are available can be obtained from offices of the loal education authority and of the careers service.
