asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the current total annual spending on cigarettes; and what was the average total expenditure in each of the last 10 years.

Consumers' expenditure on cigarettes in 1983 is provisionally estimated at £5.3 billion. Information for the period 1972 to 1982 is available in table 4.8 ofNational Income and Expenditure 1983 Edition, a copy of which is available in the House of Commons Library.
