asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his latest estimate of the administrative cost of payment of the £25 maternity benefit (a) in total and (b) per payment.

Administrative costs cannot be allocated precisely to individual benefits, but the following figures give a broad indication of costs for 1982–83:

  1. a. About £1¾ million
  2. b. About £2.90
