HC Deb 13 May 1983 vol 42 cc555-6W
Mr. William Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the latest estimated cost of (a) the Dungiven bypass, (b) the Ballykelly bypass, (c) the Limavady bypass, (d) the connecting road between the Castledawson roundabout and the motorway at Randalstown, including the new bridge across the river Bann and (e) the cost of the new bridge over the river Bann at Toome; if he will estimate the employment created by each of these schemes and for what periods; and when he expects work to start on each project.

Mr. David Mitchell

The answers are as follows:

  1. (a) £2 million.
  2. (b) There is no proposal for a Ballykelly bypass.
  3. (c) £1.8 million.
  4. (d) Options for bypassing Castledawson are under consideration and it is not yet possible to give estimated costs.
  5. (e) Options for bypassing Toome are under consideration and it is not yet possible to give estimated costs.

It is estimated that direct employment generated through expenditure on road schemes is approximately 40 man years per £1 million.

Dates have been announced for schemes starting in 1983–84; no starting dates are yet available for these projects.
