HC Deb 12 May 1983 vol 42 cc392-3W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is Scotland's share of the development aid made available under the second series of European regional development fund non-quota measures—1983 to 1987—as a proportion of the total available to the United Kingdom.

Mr. MacGregor

These Commission proposals for a second series of ERDF non-quota measures are still being considered by member states. The amount of aid for eligible areas in Scotland cannot be established until agreement has been achieved. The Government are pressing for an early decision.

Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if, in relation to the European regional development fund non-quota measures 1983 to 1987, he will support in the Council the European Parliament's proposals for a new non-quota section aimed at favouring remote and sparsely populated areas.

Mr. MacGregor

The European Commission has proposed that eligibility for non-quota section aid should be widened to include areas affected by serious problems arising from their situation as peripheral or insular regions or their depopulation. Provided that other United Kingdom interests were also adequately covered, the Government would be able to support this proposal.
