Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people were unemployed in April 1979 and January 1983, respectively, in each of the following categories: (a) up to 26 weeks, (b) 26 to 52 weeks, (c) 52 to 104 weeks, (d) 104 to 156 weeks and (e) over 156 weeks in the travel-to-work areas most closely corresponding to the following constituencies: (i) Ayr, (ii) Edinburgh, Central, (iii) Edinburgh, West, (iv) Edinburgh, Pentlands, (v) Aberdeen, South, (vi) Glasgow, Cathcart and (vii) Cunninghame, North, respectively.

The constituency of Stirling corresponds most nearly to the Stirling travel-to-work area — which comprises the employment office areas of Stirling and Alloa. The information requested is set out in the following table.

The Edinburgh, South constituency falls within the Edinburgh travel-to-work area — which comprises the employment office areas within Edinburgh city, together with the Leith, Portobello, Dalkeith, Loanhead, Musselburgh and Penicuik employment office areas.

On 10 May 1979, the number of people registered as unemployed — the old basis of the count — in the Edinburgh travel-to-work area was 15,634, and the unemployment rate was 5.4 per cent. At 10 March 1983, the number of unemployed claimants—the new basis of the count — in the same area was 31,995 and the unemployment rate was 11.1 per cent.
