Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether he will publish in the Official Report a table showing by median, quartiles and deciles the gross value added per head in 1979 and 1980 and for any later years available in industrial classes 31, 33, 34, 35, 37 and 45.

Mr. Butcher

Median and quartile estimates of gross value added per head in 1979 and 1980 for the required industrial classes are shown in the following table. Estimates relating to deciles are not available. Comparable figures for 1981 will become available later this year.

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether the distribution of gross value added per head given in his reply dated 2 March, Official Report, c. 152, is broadly consistent with that of the United Kingdom's principal competitors.

I am not aware that any comparable information is readily available for our principal competitors.
