§ Mr. Snapeasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what was the total yield from the taxation of benefit in kind received from private use of a company-financed car in each of the last three years for which the information is available;
(2) how many people were taxed for receipt of the benefit in kind of private use of a company-financed car in each of the last three years for which the information is available.
§ Mr. RidleyEstimates of yields from the taxation of the benefit derived from the private use of company cars and the numbers of people who were taxed on the benefit are as follows:
Yield £ million Numbers 1980–81 85 635,000 1981–82 110 700,000 1982–83 140 750,000 Yields are estimated for a full year at the levels of income, personal allowances, thresholds and scale charges of the respective year. Estimates are subject to a fairly wide margin of error and figures for 1981–82 and 1982–83 are provisional.
§ Mr. Snapeasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people paid no tax for the benefit in kind which they enjoy from private use of a company-financed car in each 490W of the last three years for which the information is available, because their annual income was less than the minimum above which tax liability commences.
§ Mr. RidleyThe number of people who paid no tax on the benefit derived from the private use of company cars for each of the last three years is not precisely known. However, it is thought to be of the order of 850,000.
