HL Deb 22 March 1983 vol 440 c1098WA
Lord Shackleton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are their proposals for the Ordnance Survey in the light of the critical resolution carried in the House of Lords on 9th February last.

Lord Bellwin

It remains the Government's intention that the Ordnance Survey should develop as an efficient and cost-conscious organisation maintaining high standards, and they believe that a financial structure, such as a trading fund, which would enable Ordnance Survey to operate with greater commercial awareness, is the best means to this end. The Government are, however, aware of the concern that has been expressed at the proposals, notably during the debate in the House of Lords on 9th February. They have accordingly decided to seek the views of the Ordnance Survey Advisory Board before taking any further steps in this direction.
