HC Deb 10 March 1983 vol 38 c478W
Mr. Warren

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement on the consideration of the super Sara project at the European Community Research Council on 8 February.

Mr. John Moore

The super Sara test programme was discussed at the EC Research Council on 8 February in the light of a report by three eminent scientists in which they concluded that the project would make only a modest contribution to knowledge on reactor safety, had a low benefit to cost ratio and carried a risk of substantial cost overruns. No decision on the future of super Sara was taken, but little support was expressed for the Commission's initial proposal that it should be continued at a markedly increased level of financial and manpower allocation. The Council therefore asked the Commission to prepare proposals for a reorientation of the work of the joint research centre, excluding super Sara, and for arrangements to improve the management of the JRC programme. Papers on both these topics will be discussed at the next meeting of the Research Council on 10 March.
