HC Deb 09 March 1983 vol 38 c407W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what studies have been made in the use of shale as a runway base in the Falklands.

Mr. Wiggin

All suitable materials will be considered.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the cost of restoring the road between Port Stanley and the existing airstrip.

Mr. Wiggin

The Overseas Development Administration and the Crown Agents estimate that the cost of work to keep the road open through the next Falklands winter will be about £3 million. To expedite work, and in view of the military importance of the link to the airport, this money has been authorised from defence Votes. Its final Departmental attribution will be settled later.
