§ Mr. WaldegraveA 60 per cent. reduction in the lead content of petrol (from 0.4 to 0.15 grammes per litre) will take effect from the end of 1985. The Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution considered that it should be possible to begin phasing out the residual lead from petrol by 1990: This seems a reasonable target for the United Kingdom, together with the rest of the European Community to aim at. If possible, we shall try to improve on it. A promising start was made at the EC Environment Council meeting on 16 June.
