HC Deb 29 July 1983 vol 46 cc643-4W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Lord Privy Seal what has been the total sum expressed in current cash terms adjusted for inflation by which the pay of an hon. Member from February 1974 to date has been less than the total salary recommended by the appropriate review body; and what will be that total sum on 31 December 1986 assuming (a) no future recommendations by the review body and (b) no fall in the value of the pound sterling.

Mr. Biffen

Between February 1974 and 12 June 1983 the cumulative total of salary paid to an hon. Member was £124,499 in current cash terms. This is £17,125 less than the total which he or she would have received had the recommendations of the appropriate review body within this period been accepted in full.

Under the resolution adopted by the House on 19 July the pay of an hon. Member on 31 December 1986 will be

of meetings held by each departmental Select Committee and the number of pages of (a) evidence and (b) reports each has so far produced.

Mr. Biffen

The information is as follows:

£17,702. Assuming that no further increases in Members' pay, and no fall in the value of sterling, the cumulative total of salary paid between 13 June 1983 and 31 December 1986 will be £58,978 in current cash terms. This is £8,282 less than an hon. Member would have received over the period had this year's review body recommendation been adopted in full.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he will place in the Library copies of the letter to him dated 21 July from the hon. Member for Walthamstow and his reply dated 28 July, relating to the pay of hon. Members.

Mr. Biffen

I have done so.
