Ms. Richardson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what powers are available to prison governors to restrict contact between prison lay staff and ex-prisoners.

Mr. Hurd

Under Rule 81 of the prison rules prison staff are required to make the governor aware of any contacts with ex-inmates. Rule 77(1) requires staff to obey the lawful instructions of the governor.

Any member of staff disobeying such instructions may risk disciplinary action.
