HL Deb 27 July 1983 vol 443 cc1615-6WA
Lord Mancroft

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether in view of the fact that:—

  1. (a) 18 women are now entitled to sit in the House of Lords as Peers by succession,
  2. (b) 46 women are entitled to sit as Life Peers under the Act of 1958, and
  3. (c) opposition to sex discrimination has increased since 1958.

It should not now be possible for the revived creation of hereditary Peerages to provide generally for succession through the female line.

The Lord President of the Council (Viscount Whitelaw)

I am not aware of any proposals to change existing conventions in this matter.
