§ Mr. Jannerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will take steps to reduce the present backlog of applications for registration and naturalisation.
§ Mr. WaddingtonDespite the unprecedented surge of some 70,200 applications between November 1982 and April 1983, the number of outstanding applications is no greater than it was a year ago. We shall keep up our efforts to reduce the number of outstanding cases by seeking ways to improve and simplify procedures. The recommendations of the third report of the Home Affairs Committee —Session 1982–83—are now being considered in this context.
