§ Mr. Proctorasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will estimate the percentage of United Kingdom citizens in the Republic of Zimbabwe who (a) have become British citizens under the British Nationality Act 1981 and (b) have the right of abode in the United Kingdom; and if he will estimate the number of Commonwealth citizens in the Republic of Zimbabwe who have the right of abode in the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. WhitneyIt is estimated that more than 90 per cent. of former citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies in the Republic of Zimbabwe became British citizens. All British citizens have the right of abode in the United Kingdom. We are not in a position to estimate the number of Commonwealth citizens in Zimbabwe or how many of them have the right of abode in the United Kingdom, but I would expect the latter to be very few.
