asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many young people of 16, 17 and 18 left school or college in 1980, 1981, 1982, how many are expected to leave in 1983; and how many in each age group went on, or are expected to go on, to further education of any kind in each of those years.

The information required for the latest three academic years is given in the table below. A reduction of around 3,000 is expected in the numbers of pupils leaving school in the current academic year, comprised of a fall of about 8,000 in those leaving at age 15 partly offset by small increases in those leaving in the older age groups. An increase of approximately 2,000 is expected in the number of school-leavers in 1982–83, compared with the number in the previous year, who will leave school with the intention of pursuing a full-time further
