§ 32. Mr. Newensasked the Secretary of State for Transport what discussions he has had with British Rail about pay policy.
§ Mr. EyreThe railways board's policy on pay is for the railways board to determine. We naturally discuss with the chairman of British Rail important issues, of which the effect of pay on rail finances is one. I know that the chairman is seized of the need for a realistically low settlement this year if the best interests of the railway industry and its work force are to be served.
