§ 34. Mr. Colvinasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is being done by his Department to develop a better careers guidance service in schools.
§ Mr. William SheltonThe Government recognise that schools need to provide better and more systematic careers education for all pupils, and has drawn attention to this in a number of ways. Its importance was particularly stressed in the guidance document, "The School Curriculum" which the Department published in March 1981, and we shall continue to take every opportunity to reinforce that guidance. However, responsibility for careers education rests with individual schools and local education authorities. Teachers are encouraged to work in close collaboration with officers of the local careers service, for which my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment has responsibilities.
