HC Deb 21 February 1983 vol 37 cc356-7W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied with the progress in the reduction of the neo-natal mortality rate.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The neo-natal mortality rate in England has fallen from 9.7 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1976 to 6.6 in 1981 (the latest figures available). We are encouraged by this progress which reflects credit on the sustained efforts of health professionals working in the maternity and neo-natal services.
