17. Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Minister for Trade how many motor vehicles in total were imported into the United Kingdom in 1982; how many came from countries in western Europe; how many were from Japan; and if he will express the figures in percentage terms.

Mr. Peter Rees

1,017,000 motor vehicles were imported in total in 1982. Of these 69 per cent. came from other members of the European Community. Figures for other countries are not yet available for the full year.

19. Mr. Edwin Wainwright

asked the Minister for Trade how many cars and to what value were imported into the United Kingdom in January 1983 and January 1982.

Figures for January 1983 are not yet available. Sixty-eight thousand three hundred and forty-seven cars valued at £234 million cif were imported in December 1982, an increase of one per cent. over the number imported in December 1981 at a value of £213 million.

asked the Minister for Trade if he will state the number and value of private and commercial vehicles imported from South Africa in 1981 and 1982.
