Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when Sergeant Brian O'Leary of the Metropolitan Police was first suspended on full pay; how long he has been so suspended; what payments in total he has received; whether he will give similar details of the 56 Metropolitan Police officers in like manner, including the reasons for any delay; and whether he will request the Commissioner of Police to lift the suspensions or prosecute them for any alleged offences.
§ Mr. MayhewMr. O'Leary was most recently suspended on 21 July 1981. His present pay is £14,334 per annum. The total of his pay on suspension is not readily available. The details requested in relation to the other officers could not be obtained without disproportionate cost. It would not be appropriate for my right hon. Friend to give directions to the commissioner about how he should carry out the responsibilities laid upon him by the law.
